Describing public relations can be difficult. Three definitions I found describing public relations according to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2005) are, ‘the art or science of establishing and promoting a favorable relationship with the public, the methods and activities employed to establish and promote a favorable relationship with the public, and the degree of success obtained in achieving a favorable relationship with the public.’
Deciding on public relations for my emphasis was easy. Deciding what to do with my public relations degree when I graduate is creating the problem. I have several areas of interest. I am planning to continue researching different areas of PR before making a decision.
According to The US Department Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of public relations is expected to grow 18 percent from 2006-2016, faster than average. Public relations is an increasingly competitive industry.
With such high demand for public relations specialists, I hope to make a more exact decision and begin networking and start my career.
OBJECTIVES
I will decide upon, in the next two months, at least fine areas or companies I would like to pursue for my career in public relations.
I will use any possible source I can including Internet, local businesses, friends, family, professors, etc. to become familiar with areas that interest me, including the United States Tennis Association, which is one organization I know that I am interested in learning more about.
Before graduation in the spring of 2009 I will become more familiar with the public relations field as a whole.
Public relations has become a big part of large companies and corporations. I want to familiarize myself with the different ways that public relations is handled at different companies of interest. I will come to a decision and know exactly how I want to pursue my career in PR.
Within approximately one year from graduation I want to be employed as a public relations for a large company.
By the time I graduate I hope to be well educated in each and every aspect of public relations. Being able to find a company that I enjoy working for will also be able to further my education that only hands on experience can give.
IMPACT
When I have narrowed my choices of the type of company I would like to work for, I will do research and become familiar with each company as extensively as possible.
I want to know as much as I can about a company before I start a career. I want to agree with how the company is run and what I will be doing for the company. I want to be able to work with a company that I can help to the best of my ability.
Before graduation in 2009 I will build a network including at least 3 companies that are of interest for me to pursue my career with.
Contacting prospective employers, letting them see and become familiar with your style of work, and letting them know you are interested and qualified for working with their company is the best way to get your name out there.
