Final Prospectus Letter

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Bentonville, AK 72716-8611
1-800-331-0085

Dear Wal-Mart and Associates,

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Ashby Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization devoted to providing humanitarian assistance where it is most needed. All of the Ashby Foundation efforts are currently focused in the island nation of Cape Verde, West Africa. These efforts are centered on creating a long-term impact on individual lives through educational assistance and employment-related training. We believe in the concept of teaching a man to fish instead of giving him a fish. As the Ashby Foundation is a non-profit organization, we rely on generous contributions from various sponsors. The Foundation is asking for $1 million worth of school supplies from Wal-Mart. With this large contribution, approximately 10,000 students would be sponsored with full supplies and scholarships for their education for one year. Wal-Mart is a highly publicized business. You are known throughout the world and tend to be under the spotlight frequently. Helping an organization such as The Ashby Foundation will shed some light on the values of Wal-Mart. Although the impact of your donations will not be known in a local community, the individuals and the community it does reach will be affected in a way that will last for a lifetime. The Ashby Foundation is anxious to continue their work and service to the individuals in Cape Verde, West Africa. We would like to receive a response from Wal-Mart by May 1.

SPONSOR APPEAL

As our Foundation began considering businesses that would be willing and available to help sponsor, we did not hesitate in making a decision when Wal-Mart was discussed. A major part of our foundation is to help less fortunate individuals learn the basics of running their own business. Wal-Mart is easily one of the most successful businesses up and running today. Not only would Wal-Mart be able to donate the above mentioned supplies, by example alone you would be able to show others the importance of running a great business. Wal-Mart is known for its sustainability in many things. We, as a Foundation, feel that this contribution would be a great leap in getting the positive image of Wal-Mart and its goals as a company to make the world a better place out in the public eye. We also feel that it would be a great example in getting others involved in our great cause.

PROBLEM

Cape Verde, West Africa is a young country that suffers from extreme lack of income. Young students don’t have the option to attend school. Families need as much help as possible at home to provide for themselves. School is a regular part of life for Americans. Kids begin the long process of public or private education at a very young age. We, as a Foundation and as a society have a great opportunity. We have been blessed with the means to help others and bring to them knowledge that otherwise would not have been available. We are able to teach individuals skills that will help them throughout their life and in return, they will be able to help others in the same.

OUR SOLUTION

The Ashby Foundation provides humanitarian assistance to deserving individuals in the form of educational scholarships, employment training and start-up business assistance.
We welcome your help and believe that you can bless the lives of those less fortunate. Wal-Mart can volunteer its time, donate needed goods and services or contribute to our programs. The Ashby Foundation was started in 2002 by the descendants of Hannah Cropper Ashby and Eda Ashby Bingham to honor their legacy of selfless service and compassionate care. The Foundation is funded by their descendants as well as from generous contributions by other individuals that believe in blessing the lives of others.

CAPABILITIES

The Ashby Foundation is very passionate about what we do and what we believe in. We plan on making difference with the support of multiple donors. Our goals will move forward because of our enthusiasm for education and making a difference in the lives of those who have been less fortunate. We feel that thus far we have been a successful organization. Each year the Ashby Foundation provides scholarships to keep more than 350 students in school and completing their educations. To date more the 1200 annual scholarships have been provided to deserving students on six of the Cape Verde islands. The students that receive scholarships from the Ashby Foundation provide community service hours as a way to "repay" these scholarships. Over the past four years, students have contributed more than 150,000 community service hours across six different islands. Working in groups the students have built homes, repaired schools, painted hospitals, collected food for children, distributed school supplies, participated in vaccination programs and much more.

ABOUT WAL-MART

As a company Wal-Mart gives donations to numerous organizations. “At Wal-Mart, we believe in a philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally. We know we can make the greatest impact on our communities by supporting causes that are important to our customers right in their own neighborhoods. We’re proud to be a ‘store of the community’ for all of the communities we serve by helping to provide financial and volunteer support to more than 100,000 charitable and community-focused organizations, and by using our locations to provide opportunities for our customers and associates to give back.” Scholarships and education is something that Wal-Mart Strongly supports. “We believe that a good education provides many opportunities and leads to living a better life.” As a Foundation, we strongly agree with this statement. ‘Teaching someone to fish rather than giving them a fish’ can last for a lifetime.

BUDGET

As mentioned above, The Ashby Foundation is in need of 1 million dollars worth of school supplies that will help approximately 10,000 students with their supplies and provide a scholarship for their education. “Thanks to our associates’ unselfish commitment, we donate over $5 million per year to charitable organizations.” When you realize the impact that will be made from this donation and the positive influence that will last a lifetime on the individual you give an education to is priceless. Each individual that is given an education is able to take that with them throughout their life. In Cape Verde education is something that is not easy to come by and if given the opportunity many would not be able to afford it financially. By educating one person, that person is then in return, able to pass on his/her education to another individual. The long-term hope is that Cape Verde will be able to sustain their population and no longer need the help and donations of other individuals and corporations.
In donating $1 million you will not only be helping the lives of the individuals you send to school, but you will be helping the development of a fledgling country. We, at The Ashby Foundation feel very strongly about the service that we are able to provide to the individuals in Cape Verde. We also feel that receiving the above-mentioned donation from Wal-Mart will increase our service range to a point we never thought imaginable. Thank you very much for your time and consideration in this proposal. We look forward to hearing from you. Please contact us anytime before May 1 if any concerns or questions arise.

Sincerely,
The Ashby Foundation

Spring!

The month of April is usually something that I enjoy. Not this time. I know, I know, it is only the second day of the month. But April is 0 for 2 in the good weather count.
I enjoyed a great weekend ... I have enjoyed five of the last five weekends in St. George with nothing but pool-side lounging and non-competitive tennis for hours on end (sorry Chan, step it up)! My favorite moment of all weekends combined was receiving a phone call from my little sister who was still in Logan last weekend. "Hey, what's going on down there? I am going to a soccer game with about nine layers of clothing on and it's snowing AGAIN." As that statement was made, the rest of our family was laying out next to the pool and the temperature gage read 82 degrees!! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!?!
I am attempting, although it may not seem like it, to be as optimistic as possible. It is hard, but I am doing my best. Here are a few of the things that I do enjoy about Spring:
-The non-stop smack talk of tennis matches with anyone at anytime. At the first sign of warm weather my tennis skills seem to improve without even an hour of practice ...
-Spring shoes! New patterned flats that go with everything and nothing all at once!
-Birds chirping every morning. Although the weather is not great, I have still heard the small chirp of birds for several mornings in a row.
-Popsicles! Any kind, any flavor, anytime of the day! (push-ups and otter-pops are definitely at the top of the list!)
-Exclamation points!! They seem so much more enthusiastic when the sun is shining! (this may be a pathetic excuse for me using this punctuation mark non-stop.)
-Missing class. This is fun year-round actually!
-Making plans for the summer. Once spring comes, my summer automatically seems so involved, it never ends up being that way but the talk of it keeps me entertained. I think I have planned at least four large vacations this summer ...
-Woot-offs! This is a new favorite and I hope it will continue year around. Thanks Dad!! Check out woot.com.
I think I could add a hundred more things to this list. But I am going to wait for the first day when the temperature reaches above 50 degrees and I beat Chantel at tennis AGAIN!

Alcohol Sales on Sunday Pose No Threat

Banning the sale of alcohol on Sundays has been an ongoing process and a heated debate for several counties in Utah; namely Nibley, Utah.

"Because Nibley accidentally failed to outlaw Sunday beer sales when the town revised its ordinances in 2002, the Maverik Country Store at 3090 S. Main was allowed to sell beer on Sundays when it opened in October. Responding to complaints from a competing convenience store, the nearby town of Hyrum in early December OK'd Sunday beer sales."

An employee from the Maverick store in Nibley, who did not want her name exposed, said, "Our sales our three times as much on Sunday as they are on any other day. I think it is better to sale alcohol here than have people drive to other counties and come back drunk."

The subject of selling alcoholic beverages has been in dispute in a few other States, however, Utah has been the main focus.

" ... some people in conservative Cache County oppose Sunday beer sales. Cache Valley was settled by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which prohibits consumption of alcohol, tobacco and coffee ... Craig Rasmussen, the only member of the Hyrum City Council to vote against allowing Sunday beer sales, called it a moral issue — although not necessarily an LDS issue."

The Utah Legislature is made up of 90 percent LDS members. Many individuals are worried that this is having an impact on alcohol laws. The LDS church prohibits alcohol consumption of any kind.

"The Maverick Store in Nibley has been open for about a month. Its managers applied for and got a Class A liquor license from the city. And since the city has no law on the books against Sunday beer sales, they're selling beer on Sundays." "We got to this point by default," said Nibley city councilman Larry Jacobsen. "We've just never dealt with this because nobody has ever wanted to sell beer in Nibley on Sunday or any other day."

Kelli Mayfield, a long time resident in Cache Valley, was asked her opinion about selling beer on Sundays and said, "I think that is ridiculous. If you are going to ban the sale of alcohol ban it everyday of the week. Why should we not be able to purchase on Sunday something that we can buy every other day of the week. I think they should leave it up to individual owners of the store as to whether they want to sale alcohol at all no matter what day of the week it is."

A City Council meeting was held earlier this month, in Nibley, to discuss beer sales on Sunday. Everyone had their own reasoning to their stated opinions during the meeting. Many at the meeting felt that banning alcohol sales one day of the week made no sense. A Nibley resident stated that she would rather have alcohol available to purchase closer to home than have individuals travel to other counties and risk drinking and driving. If alcohol sales were ban on Sunday in Cache Valley, people would be forced to drive to Box Elder County or Idaho to purchase alcohol.

A worry that goes along with alcohol sales, not only on Sunday, is providing easier means for underage drinkers to obtain alcohol. " Stephen J. Allred, prevention program manager for the Utah County, Utah substance abuse program, said Utah County, Utah cities that allow alcohol to be sold on Sunday are not only encouraging drug and alcohol abuse in youth, but violence, delinquency, teenage pregnancy and school dropouts."

"I don't think alcohol can ever solve a problem and I think it makes the world worse for our children. I wish our county would become a dry county so that we wouldn't have to worry about alcohol in our county at all. Especially in a college town, I feel like problems involving alcohol tend to be at a higher risk than normal and frankly, I don't want my children exposed to it," said Camy Marshall, a mother of four.

Mayor Gerald Knight had plenty to say about this issue, especially since his city has been the center of attention with the opening of the new Maverick store last October. When asked about the issues of the LDS church playing a factor in any decision regarding alcohol sales he said, "...I don't think that is playing a part. Probably not at all actually. The Councilmen are sensitive to morals, not individual religions. Concerns have mainly been about safety ... our liquor laws will be updated as we see a need for them to change. As of right now, we don't see a need for change."

A number of states have abolished their blue laws prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays. The result? The states that have enacted Sunday sales laws report increases in revenues but no increases in drunk driving or underage drinking.” Sunday alcohol sales appear to be a win-win situation. Permitting the sale of alcohol on Sunday, the second busiest shopping day of the week, increases tax revenues, but doesn’t increase either drunk driving or underage drinking.

The idea of banning alcohol sales on Sunday poses no real positive outcome. Whether alcohol is available six days of the week or seven, it is going to be purchased no matter what. Keeping alcohol closer to home can only bring positive benefits and eliminating a possibility of more DUI's.

Positioning Framework

February 6, 2008
Describing public relations can be difficult. Three definitions I found describing public relations according to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2005) are, ‘the art or science of establishing and promoting a favorable relationship with the public, the methods and activities employed to establish and promote a favorable relationship with the public, and the degree of success obtained in achieving a favorable relationship with the public.’
Deciding on public relations for my emphasis was easy. Deciding what to do with my public relations degree when I graduate is creating the problem. I have several areas of interest. I am planning to continue researching different areas of PR before making a decision.
According to The US Department Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of public relations is expected to grow 18 percent from 2006-2016, faster than average. Public relations is an increasingly competitive industry.
With such high demand for public relations specialists, I hope to make a more exact decision and begin networking and start my career.
OBJECTIVES
I will decide upon, in the next two months, at least fine areas or companies I would like to pursue for my career in public relations.
I will use any possible source I can including Internet, local businesses, friends, family, professors, etc. to become familiar with areas that interest me, including the United States Tennis Association, which is one organization I know that I am interested in learning more about.
Before graduation in the spring of 2009 I will become more familiar with the public relations field as a whole.
Public relations has become a big part of large companies and corporations. I want to familiarize myself with the different ways that public relations is handled at different companies of interest. I will come to a decision and know exactly how I want to pursue my career in PR.
Within approximately one year from graduation I want to be employed as a public relations for a large company.
By the time I graduate I hope to be well educated in each and every aspect of public relations. Being able to find a company that I enjoy working for will also be able to further my education that only hands on experience can give.
IMPACT
When I have narrowed my choices of the type of company I would like to work for, I will do research and become familiar with each company as extensively as possible.
I want to know as much as I can about a company before I start a career. I want to agree with how the company is run and what I will be doing for the company. I want to be able to work with a company that I can help to the best of my ability.
Before graduation in 2009 I will build a network including at least 3 companies that are of interest for me to pursue my career with.
Contacting prospective employers, letting them see and become familiar with your style of work, and letting them know you are interested and qualified for working with their company is the best way to get your name out there.

Talking Points (elevator pitch)

February 6, 2008

Strong work ethic. Getting a job done and getting it done right is something I take pride in. If someone has the confidence and trust in me to get something done, I do not want to let them down.

Excellent Communication Skills. Being able to communicate with others has always been a strong point of mine. Public relations involves communication the media and I feel that I would be able to distribute information that is easy to understand and professional.

Honest. I feel that I have always been a very trustworthy person. No matter the situation I am in, one would not have to worry about me swaying my values or what would be expected of me.

Press Release to Stories

Apple has become an icon in the world of technology. With the recent release of the new MacBook Air , the world's thinnest notebook, Apple has received a lot of media attention. Not only has Apple been advertising the latest in innovative technology, but so have several other companies advancing their lines of technological products available. Companies were all over the MacBook Air the moment Apple released the product.
Engadget is known for posting the latest and greatest in technology. They snagged onto the MacBook Air with this story. Engadget gives small bits of information on the products is writes about. However, they get the reader enthralled in the new product and it leaves them wanting to know more.
CNNMoney also grabbed hold of the MacBook Air. However, unlike Engadget, CNN focused a little more on the negative aspects of the Air while comparing it to other machines like the ThinkPad X300 notebook.
Press Releases for any product can be very useful and informative to the media. Had Apple not given the media a press release, the information and release of the MacBook Air would not have gotten out the way it did. It would have been based on word of mouth by customers and employees. Which, can be a very effective marketing tool, however, when looking at a time frame, press releases get the attention of the media and consumers in a timely fashion.
As far as the effectiveness of this particular press release [of the MacBook Air], the stories seem to be well written and informative from what the press release said. No matter how amazing your press release is, there is bound to be negative media focusing on your product. With Engadget, they did a great job with minimal details. They told what they had researched and found out about the product and also posted a link to the Apple Website to get more information. As for the CNNMoney article, they focused on several of the negative aspects of the Air, paying particular attention to the battery feature that cannot be changed by the owner of the computer. Talking with marketers of battery companies, they seem to think this could drops sales for Apple. Taking into consideration the amount of product owners that travel with their notebooks, this could be a great holdback to a potential buyer.
With my minimal experience with press releases, I find them a very valuable form of marketing for any company. Whether you are selling a product or service, a press release is a sure way to get the information you want out to the media and the public. A good press release can get more media attention than most options of marketing.

Final Press Release

Utah State University, Interior Design
An Exhibit, Four Years in the Making, You Don’t Want To Miss

Contact: Danielle Wise
801-856-0680
777 E. 900 N. #16
Logan, Utah 84321

LOGAN, Utah-Each year the graduating students in the interior design program put on an amazing exhibit. The exhibit is a final farewell and an opportunity for the students to show off their work that they have so studiously completed over their four-year education. The exhibit is opened to all who are interested and runs for two weeks.
For a student who has already graduated and experienced her own senior exhibit, Jill Skousen said, “For me, the Interior Design Senior Exhibit was the culminating point of my bachelor’s degree [at Utah State University]. It was a chance for me to showcase the projects I had worked on through four years of school and to receive feedback from other students. I do wish that we had a wider audience at our exhibit because we had put so much effort into the event and it didn’t get the traffic we had hoped for. The exhibit has great potential to be a platform for Utah State to show the caliber of their Interior Design program to prospective students, design professionals, and the community.”
Danielle Wise who is a senior in the Interior Design program and will be graduating spring of 2008 said, “Our senior project is the main focus of the event. This year it entails redesigning an existing building to fit the needs of a new company’s corporate headquarters. The building is 90,000 square feet. We are required to design it top to bottom, exterior and interior. The senior exhibit also gives the program credit for out efforts and also gives the community a sense of our relationship with national and international organizations and awards.”
This year the seniors hope to bring in an audience that can appreciate the work that has been done. They are also trying to raise money to put toward the exhibit. In the past donations have been made from around the community and the program hopes that those interested will take this opportunity to support a great program once again.

Spirulina

Some might say that I am not a very healthy eater ... I could not agree more. My diet consists of sugar, candy, and anything else that contains sugar. I've never been one to take vitamins or supplements to compensate for my lake of a healthy diet. Until now that is!
Spirulina Spirulina called the worlds healthiest superfood, contains vegetable protein, rich in beta carotene, iron, vitamin B-12 and the rare essential fatty acid, GLA.
Spirulina has been around for nearly 4 million years. What exactly is Spirulina?
I'm still learning about Spirulina and the advantages it can have for me. As with all supplements, there are side effects.
If you have anymore useful information or comments about spirulina, let me know!
